September 2002 - LOS ANGELES--Why are so many Americans still in the grips of stress, anxiety and depression one year after September 11th, even after security has been tightened across the nation? The severity of the shock and continued threats of terrorism have left many of us struggling to cope. So how do we gain control over these emotions?

Can our minds affect our emotions and behavior -- does the mind really contain commands that kick in and control the way we think, act and feel without us knowing it?

It can, and does, explains author L. Ron Hubbard in his book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. Responses to a severe and shocking incident like Sept 11th are carefully stored in the reactive or subconscious part of our minds. Hubbard's research into the mind revealed that what we know as the "unconscious mind" is, in fact, conscious more often than we might think.

As soon as we experience physical or emotional pain, or our awareness is lowered in any way -- such as from shock, weariness, drunkenness, fatigue, drugs or illness -- this reactive part of the mind kicks in. All you need is similar circumstances to reactivate the memory and you re-live all of the emotions of that time again.

Any new threat of terrorism we see on the news, the sound of an aircraft overhead, or any other similarity to those stressful days has the potential to bring back those emotions.

This past year has unfortunately provided enough of such triggers to keep our reactive mind constantly in play. While the reactive mind is the underlying source of stress, anxiety and depression -- there is a way to get rid of it with Dianetics techniques.
