October 2001 - Death Before Dawn, a new military action adventure about Matthew Barrett, a young Navy SEAL officer attempting to live up to the memory of his hero father, has been published by Writers Showcase Press.

The new novel by retired Navy SEAL and combat veteran Martin L. Strong mixes fact and fiction as it takes the reader through the trials and tribulations of LT. Matthew Barrett leading his handpicked band of Naval warriors on a quest to prove themselves in combat.

Matthew Barrett both loved and hated his father, Arthur Barrett winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor. But Matthew's world changes forever when his father dies, robbing the young man of a chance to ever prove himself to his father.

Matthew struggles to deal with this burden and in time finds himself volunteering for the most rigorous military duty he can imagine - the United States Navy SEALs. He soon learns just how tough being a good leader can be.

After surviving the grueling 26 week SEAL course, Matthew is assigned to the highly classified SEAL mini-submarine command where he promptly fails to impress his commanding officer. Matthew is saved when he is picked to lead a new recon unit that is, in the opinion of his commanding officer, a project doomed to fail from the start.

Matthew assembles the men of this new unit, Senior Chief Auger - a veteran SEAL, Boone his pointman, Jorgy the machinegunner, Doc, and Oby the sniper. Together these brave young men train day and night knowing that any minute their CO will pull the plug on the project.

As we follow the SEALs progress we are also learning that the United States faces a terrorist overthrow of the Egyptian government. Matthew Barrett takes a big chance during the final unit test, a mission that he can not complete successfully. He uses his wits and with the advice and skill of his fellow SEALs does the impossible.

The surprise success ensures Matthew and his SEALs will indeed stay intact as a new unit. Meanwhile the situation in Egypt demands the attention of NATO and particularly the United States.

Matthew's new SEAL unit is forward deployed and positioned to participate in the upcoming attack by allied forces. The story races to the climax as Matthew and his SEALs struggle to complete their mission and survive the bloody combat involved. As the mission comes to an end Matthew finds out once and for all if he truly measures up.

The author, Martin Strong, is a decorated veteran of over thirty special operations combat missions. He brings this insight and his twenty years of SEAL experience to every page. The sequel; Violence of Action: SEAL Strike Book Two, is due out in February 2002. Martin Strong is also putting the finishing touches on a screenplay called Messiah.
