May 2001 - PHOENIX - Internationally known Japanologist Boyé Lafayette De Mente has published free electronic editions of four of his travel and business books on Japan on the Internet.
The four titles are: EXOTIC JAPAN - The Visual & Sensual Pleasures; P's & CUES FOR TRAVELERS IN JAPAN - How to Get the Most Out of Your Time (and Yen!); JAPANESE SECRETS OF GRACEFUL LIVING; and, JAPAN UNMASKED! Understanding the Japanese Mind-Set -- Why Japanese businessmen and politicians think and behave the way they do, and how to cope and cooperate with them.
Involved with Japan since the late 1940s as a member of an intelligence agency, student, employee of Japanese companies and trade journalists, De Mente wrote the first books ever on the unique Japanese way of doing business, beginning with "Japanese Etiquette & Ethics in Business" in 1959, and "How to Do Business With the Japanese," in 1961.
De Mente was the first to introduce Western businessmen to the now popular Japanese terms kaizen (kigh-zen), or "continuous improvement," nemawashi (nay-mah-wah-she), "behind the scenes consensus building," wa (wah), "controlled harmony," and kanban (kahn-bahn), which literally means "sign" or "bulletin board," but came to mean "just in time parts delivery" --a concept that helped revolutionize American manufacturing in the 1970s.
