March 2001 - SAN FRANCISCO - February, 2001 - The keys to a successful love life can be found in business, or more specifically, in business school. This according to author A.K. Crump, whose new book, "Everything I Know about Dating I Learned in Business School," says that the basic practices of successful businesses are fundamentally the same as those required to be successful in love.

The book, which is referred to as a "guide to dating in a modern society," states that both operate on the same basic principles. Each requires proper product packaging, positioning, and advertising, as well as financing, negotiations, and consulting. Additionally, the core enterprises are always founded on trust.

Even when people understand the similarities between business and romance, they misunderstand the connection. Business and commerce are essentially an extension of human relationships, and therefore operate by a set of common rules. Since the rules are based on human interaction, they tend to be the same for other situations as well, such as in romance. One difference between the two is that in romance people are encouraged to express their feelings, whereas in business it's often considered more acceptable to keep them under control. The ground rules governing both are however the same.

Where do most people go wrong? The common answer is 'packaging'. In an online survey at the website for TCB-Cafe Publishing, the publisher of the book, the majority of visitors selected packaging as the most important aspect in dating. The book however stresses that though extremely critical, packaging is not as important as market research. Since it is difficult to target a product without understanding what the consumer wants, needs, and will find attractive, it's also very difficult to know if a person is really a good fit for their target markets without research.

Another critical area is discovering your competitive advantage, which allows you to know where you can stand out from the crowd. Without knowing your competitive advantage, it's very easy to play up features that are attributes for some people, but are actually disadvantageous for you. Successful businesses and dates are those that understand their competitive advantages and use them to their benefit.

According to Crump, "If you want to constantly feel good about your results, you at least need to follow the basics: market research, product packaging, positioning, advertising, finances, negotiations, and knowing when to use outside help, or what we call consultants. These are business basics, and from the experiences of those who have great dating lives these are also the romantic basics." The book is a compilation of business practices combined with romantic advice and humorous, useful anecdotes from the dating lives of eligible singles around the world.

Crump sums it up by saying, "Business schools teach these principles, and we apply them to dating. People read them, try them, and love them. You don't have to be an MBA to learn them, and of course you don't have to invest as much either."
