February 2001 - February 2001 marks the tenth anniversary of the continuous publication of the book "Final Exit: The Practicalities of Self-Deliverance and Assisted Suicide for the Dying" by Derek Humphry. In l991 it was the Number One bestseller in the charts of both the New York Times and Publishers' Weekly. Totally revised in l997, the paperback continues today to sell worldwide in twelve languages. To meet demand last year (2000) Random House had to go back to press twice for new printings. It currently has a sales ranking of 1,863 out of Amazon's more than one million titles. Bookstores which were once nervous about having such a book on their shelves today stock it routinely. 'Final Exit' ranks number 29 in the American Library Association's top 100 most challenged books. Derek Humphry, the original founder of the Hemlock Society, commented: "Given the current unreceptive political climate to any form of euthanasia, people are having to look to their own resources for relief from terminal suffering. In the last decade I guess several thousand dying people have used 'Final Exit' to hasten an inevitable end." There is now also a "Supplement to Final Exit" (2000) outlining newly developed ways of peacefully ending life with inert gases. And a popular video version which has been shown on television. Both books are also available digitally from PublishingOnline.com, as are other of Derek Humphry's publications.
