January 2001 - January, 2001 is the release date for When the Past Meets the Present, a science fiction novel written by author John Orizon when he was only 14 years old.

"The book has movie written all over it," reviewer Mike Woznicki claims. Financed by the American government, the greatest biotechnological experiment of the century is taking place, far away from cameras and publicity---a giant venture hidden deep in the Amazon jungle that is destined to develop into the greatest danger mankind has ever faced. Soon genetically-augmented dinosaurs are roaming the Earth, living war machines with human intelligence and the ability to reason---the first perfect species that ever breathed on our planet. Now that species is attempting to replace its own creator!

Born in Greece in 1983 just three days into the year, John Orizon was a quiet child until a personal tragedy changed his outlook on life. Then, "Many things changed in me," John, now 17 and studying genetic engineering at UMass in Massachussetts, says. "I remained sensitive in some things, but I acquired unbelievable hardness in others. I learned to identify what was best for my interest and not be ashamed of claiming it."

John's teachers were the first to recognize his talent for writing. "My first work was a fable of a few pages," John says, "which I kept to myself. My second work, well, you can figure out which one that is!"

When the Past Meets the Present follows American President Clive as he realizes too late what horrors he has unwittingly unleashed on the world, and his attempts---all futile in the face of political greed and human nature---to stop the extinction of humanity. Balancing this power struggle is another struggle, that of two New York City children, Daniel and Nancy, and Nancy's mother Claire, as they struggle to survive as victims of the monsters unleashed by that political greed.

Throughout, Orizon makes it clear that "the dreams of a man who played god but couldn't manage to control his creations" were to blame for the disaster. It was only a matter of time before those creations would escape and leave millions dead, through their own actions and those of the politicians using the creatures' escape as a reason for armed aggression against other nations. The novel has a sobering message, delivered by a 14-year-old child.

IUniverse.com will release When the Past Meets the Present as a high-quality trade paperback (ISBN# 0-595-14305-9) in January 2001. It can be ordered through Ingram.

What the reviewers are saying about When the Past Meets the Present and its author:

"...Orizon has real talent for the written word and this book is real talent. For me to read fiction I need to be captured right from the beginning, and this book did just that. The storyline moves well and the plot isn't predictable. The book has movie written all over it." --- Mike Woznicki (reviewer)

"...When the Past Meets the Present has it all---genetically-augmented dinosaurs wreaking global havoc, crooked politicians, government plots, war between nations, war against nature, against human conscience. The story is well-plotted; the writing is at once surprisingly mature and possessed of a childish charm, the infelicities gently balancing the somber subject matter." --- M. Gilks (writer)
