December 2000 - In the summer of 1917, George the Fifth of England sends two men, Richard Cromwell and John Kestrel, on a desperate mission: Rescue his cousin Tsar Nicholas and bring him and his family to England! They are thrust headlong in the maelstrom that is Russia at war with Germany and itself. To have any hope of success, they must somehow make contact with the Tsar and find allies in a dark world of shifting loyalties where bribery, double cross, and murder is the norm. Under cover, they slide into different ends of St. Petersburg society: Cromwell with loyalists and army officers, and Kestrel into the world of the Soviet workers. Cromwell makes friends with Yuri Cherkassy, an amiable rogue, ex-officer, and a man out for himself. He has entree into the palace where the Tsar is being held. Kestrel makes the acquaintance of Lenin, who, for his own ends, is willing to get Kestrel in to see the Tsar. Into play comes Lucius Bulloch, who rescues Cromwell from German agents. Bulloch is a US Treasury agent, part of a team trying to trace a stolen arms shipment -- arms sent to help Russia in their war with Germany, but which now may be used for revolution. Their first attempt fails through betrayal. Instead of being shot, they are ordered out of the country. Instead, they go to ground with new cover to gather intelligence on Russia and to try again if possible. They are now racing against time as the Tsar and his family are to be taken East by train. Their last gamble, steal the train! This electronic book is being offered for immediate download or via email directly from the Publisher, Zander eBooks.
