September 2000 - "In Seeds of the Pomegranate Sherry Lazarus Ross extends the everyday moment into deep mythology, using the commonplace as an avenue into the emotions. She understands Eliot's insistence on 'the objective correlative.'" -- POET magazine
This is Ms. Ross' first book of poetry. She studied with the highly respected and loved poet David Ignatow. "It was a pleasure and honor to have been able to work with David. He taught me a great deal about focus and how to use my voice to heighten the meaning and emotion of each poem. He used to tell us that everyone has noble and worthwhile thoughts, but that this is not what makes a poet. A poet finds a unique way to bring new recognition of these worthwhile thoughts and feelings to the reader. This is accomplished through craft and compassion. David was an honest and sensitive teacher who was interested in helping you find your own voice."
In Seeds of the Pomegranate Sherry L. Ross uses the Greek myth of Persephone as a metaphor for her life. Her poems takes you through the seasons and through a rebirth by means of the everyday experiences of life as we pass from one month to the next. They touch upon the victories and losses we all encounter and give them the chance to be heard even though they are not always understood. She tells the myth of Persephone in the forward of the book to add to the symbolic understanding of the book's meaning and progress. But these poems stand in their own right and are accessible to those who like poetry even if the myth is not known.
Dr Vern G. Swanson, Director of the Springville Museum of Art in Utah, author, lecturer on art and culture, and essayist says of Seeds of the Pomegranate: "Sherry Ross is a conjurer of vivid images. Her verse is like condensed life or "nature concentrate." She speaks to us on many levels and her poems remind me of geological stratum, layers of experience pressed tightly together. This technique gives her voice an hypnotic quality that urges me to read on. I want to know what she will say next. I believe she understands many things I want to know."
