May 2000 - All living things are subject to natural patterns of eating, sleeping, and other vital functions. Among these natural phases, circadian rhythms mimic the external clock of the earth's rotation, completing a cycle approximately every 24 hours. During the course of the cycle, there are definite patterns in body temperature, blood pressure, mental alertness, hormone and neurotransmitter production, physical strength, aerobic capacity, and metabolic efficiency, just to name a few.

Dr. Sidney Baker, an expert in the nutritional, environmental, and biochemical aspects of chronic health problems, has developed a scientifically sound, total health program that capitalizes on the predictability of circadian rhythms to achieve optimum wellness, resistance to disease, and weight control. He shares this easy-to-follow plan in his new book, THE CIRCADIAN PRESCRIPTION: Get in Step with Your Body's Natural Rhythms to Maximize Energy, Vitality, and Longevity (G. P. Putnam's Sons; $24.95 U.S. / $34.99 Canada; May 1, 2000), which he co-authored with Karen Baar, M.P.H.

The heart of the program is the Circadian Diet, which seeks to synchronize our bodies with our circadian clocks by emphasizing when we eat as much as what we eat. This powerful and effective program gives the body what it needs when it needs it by simply increasing protein intake in the early part of the day, and moving most carbohydrates to the evening. Eating protein during the day increases alertness and energy, and ingesting carbohydrates at night helps produce restful sleep, detoxification, repair, and restoration. By making these simple shifts, individuals will:

  • sleep better and feel energized all day long;
  • alleviate symptoms of menopause, jet lag, and Attention Deficit Disorder;
  • be able to treat and prevent infertility, prostate disease, and Syndrome X;
  • enhance mental acuity and emotional balance; and
  • achieve and maintain ideal weight.
Readers will also learn what maladies can develop when they ignore or disrupt their circadian rhythms through poor diet or lifestyle. More than one quarter of the population suffers from Syndrome X, or insulin resistance, where the body is forced to produce excessive levels of insulin. This can trigger a number of undesirable side effects and health problems, including Type II Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, colitis, arthritis, and asthma.

Unlike many nutrition programs on the market today, The Circadian Prescription is not restrictive. The diet incorporates specific foods that provide vital information to the body to reduce risk factors for chronic disease. Dr. Baker prescribes a Rhythmic Shake which is an easy-to-make, high-protein drink that can produce immediate, dramatic improvements in energy, mood, and alertness, as well as long-term health benefits. Losing weight is also easier because the program utilizes the circadian rhythms to increase metabolic efficiency. The book also offers breathing techniques, meditation and rhythmic exercise to help get readers in sync with their bodies' powerful natural rhythms.
