So Much Data So Little Math

April 2000 - Data is everywhere. Trends and patterns exist in that data. Yet, if you never took the right math courses-what can you do about it? The new book: So Much Data So Little Math has an answer. So Much Data is for people surrounded by data; So Little Math is for people that have very little math or want to avoid math. It is like The Portable MBA meets Overcoming Math Anxiety.

How can this work? First, the goals are lower. If you want an in-depth understanding of data analysis-then go elsewhere. This book is for people that want to try out data analysis before they commit to years of formal math training. Case studies involve ordinary people with real-world problems. They include Katie, an employee in a large corporation, Bob and Josie, who just purchased a franchise business, Maria, a small business owner, Cynthia, a school teacher and Ronald in mail-order.

Why do this? Dr. William May has an answer: "Let's face it: math is hard for many people and data is unavoidable for most people. For many people basic correlation and trend analysis are completely beyond them." Bill continues: "Think smaller. Those of us with graduate degrees often offer the advice that everyone who deals with a lot of trends and data absolutely must have a college statistics course. But think of what that means to a lot of people."

A statistics course at a local community college is a 200-hour time investment (counting in-class time plus study plus driving to and from school). Multiply this by two or three if you don't have the prerequisites. An associated web site (www.somuchdata.com) is a 10-minute time investment. It gets your feet wet. So Much Data So Little Math is a 5-hour time investment. It gives you a reasonable level of understanding.

William May is an adjunct professor of computer science at Virginia Tech. He has been involved in graduate education for many years and eventually learned that there was a whole world full of non-graduate students out there. He wrote this book for them.
