February 2000 - Dona Schenker, the award winning author of three adolescent novels, has twice had her work optioned by Hollywood. While promoting her latest book, The Secret Circle, Schenker is also speaking up about a topic close to the heart of all parents. In a radio interview with Tracee Evans, a reporter in Houston, Schenker said, "We know the incredible benefit that reading aloud to young children has for their future in school. All too often, though, we give up this relaxing, bonding activity with our children when they begin to read to themselves."
Evans, concerned with peer pressure and where it can lead, chose Schenker as an interview subject because The Secret Circle deals with this troublesome topic in a unique and entertaining way. "Books are icebreakers. When we continue to read with our older children, we can choose novels that deal with problems they face on a daily basis."
When Schenker was interviewed on the Tangee Patton "Lifestyle" show, KMOL in San Antonio, she said, "Writers have always sensed that parents who read aloud can make as great a difference in their adolescent's success as they've had in their young child's future, but for different reasons."
After sympathizing with her host about his past peer pressure problems, Schenker continued, "Novels for young people are usually a chronicle of change on the part of the main character. If the main character makes a good, but difficult decision, this frequently empowers our kids to do the same thing. If you're there and involved at the outset, it's dynamite."
Schenker has been asked to write an article for The Express News about the power reading with a child has.
"Books help kids make comparisons, judgements and decisions. Adolescents continue to see the world through books, and it doesn't have to be the violent world they see in the media. Reading together and the discussion that follows could possibly build the most lasting memories you and your child will have."
The Secret Circle has an interactive web site, www.secretcircle.com, with a Loyalty Test, Writing Contest and Teacher Discussion Questions. The book is presently in bookstores, and can also be bought from Amazon.com on the www.secretcircle.com web site.
