December 1998 - The typical response to corporate downsizing is frustration, anger and oftentimes, gnashing of teeth. However, if your philosophy in life is all is well, all the time, in this scenario, you would accept the pink slip, turn the last page of this chapter in your life and begin interpreting the vague yet intriguing aspects of future chapters.

Such is the case for Erma Roquemore, author of the new book 24Kt. Goal -- Ten Steps to Personal and Professional Success. Erma recently found herself in this precarious position for the fourth time in her professional career. She is no stranger to downsizing, rightsizing or what she refers to as "capsizing, for some." As a single parent, she is faced with another bend in the road. Erma says, "It's not the end of the road, unless I fail to make the turn."

Raised in some of the most unpretentious neighborhoods of Detroit, Michigan, Erma has learned that rolling with the punches translates unconditionally to turning the other cheek. She says, "The school of hard knocks is not really a school, but a playing field where the rules change based on who's playing the game and what their definition of the game is."

Born with a skin disease that had her limping most of the time and wearing thigh high socks and white gloves all the time, Erma says she knows adversity. The fifth of eight brothers and sisters and one foster brother, she was taunted as a child and called Erm, the germ. She recalls the negative challenges of male classmates to other male students by chanting: "The last one in class likes Erma Roquemore!" Yet, she also remembers the positive challenges placed in front of her by her late Uncle Billy, who was born blind. She says, "He helped me learn to respect and love myself." A professor at Southern Flint University, Uncle Billy used to lovingly touch her face, shoulders and hands and tell her how beautiful she was. He told her she had the slender fingers of a concert pianist, and that Erm the germ "isn't bad" as he proceeded to accurately enumerate all the ways her body effectively handles germs.

Her book outlines the steps she has taken to propel her to success. Steps like Get Rid of Baggage, Check Out Your Posse, and Do It Twoday are a sampling of what she defines in 24Kt. Goal and is what she herself is currently using to get her through yet another blow to the midsection of her professional career. Most assuredly, Erma has triumphed over enormous odds, rising to the ranks of middle manager in corporate America, authoring and self-publishing two motivational books and living comfortably in an upscale area of (South) Tulsa, Oklahoma.

As she handles another corporate downsizing, she has already documented every possible "good" that can result from this layoff. Erma says, "I am confident, directed and focused."

At last, Erma has elegantly shed the wretched cocoon and is no longer the "ugly duckling" but a striking and graceful swan with the wing capacity of an eagle.
