July 1998 - WASILLA, AK. Write your own obituary. Read a book by an author you disagree with. Sign up for a class on a new subject. These are just three of many possible ways to celebrate Self-University Week says Charles D. Hayes, founder of Autodidactic Press and author of the new book Beyond the American Dream: Lifelong Learning and the Search for Meaning in a Postmodern World.
Self-University Week -- sponsored by Autodidactic Press and listed as an official event in Chase's Annual Events -- has a simple purpose, Hayes explains: "It is to remind adults that each of us has a responsibility to help shape the future by pursuing lifelong education. Back-to-school activities draw our attention to the education of children, but far too little attention is paid to adult learning. Posterity demands that real education for adults also begins in September."
Autodidactic Press has sponsored Self-University Week since the publication of Hayes' first book Self-University: The Price of Tuition is the Desire to Learn. Your Degree is a Better Life in 1989. "Our intention," says Hayes, "is to continually expand this celebration until the value of lifelong learning is indelibly etched into the national consciousness. Only through non-traditional on-going education will our citizenry gain the intellectual tools to confront -- and reason out for themselves -- difficult issues such as abortion, gun control, gay rights, and the death penalty Adults-- especially those who have reached the September of life -- have enough life experience to put the whole notion of education in perspective. Their understanding of the importance of lifelong learning is a foundation of wisdom that younger generations can build upon." You can join this year's celebration by visiting the Self-University Week page at http://www.autodidactic.com.
Beyond the American Dream: Lifelong Learning and the Search for Meaning in a Postmodern World is available in bookstores and in cyberspace (ISBN 0-9621979-2-0, Retail price:$26.95.) Beyond the American Dream makes a compelling case that "America's greatest treasures are found not in our shopping malls, but in our libraries."
