No Sun Without Shadow
Approaching his thirtieth birthday, Vergil Tynan closely identifies with Sisyphus, doomed to eternally push a boulder up a mountain, only to begin anew when he reaches the top. Sisyphus's plight seems to sum up his own existence as a low-level employee at a large insurance company.
Vergil's only comforts—sex with wild, electrifying Regina and scuba diving with his buddy Nick—aren't enough to relieve his growing angst, which he nourishes with compulsive readings of Albert Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus. When Regina announces that she is pregnant, further discord follows as the couple argues about the baby's religious upbringing. The intractable positions taken by Regina (Jewish) and Vergil (Catholic) strain an already volatile relationship.
Through it all, Vergil is haunted by the question posed by Camus: "Does The Absurd dictate death?"
