Rigging the Wind
"Vaseful of Wild Roses"
A long bud lets a petal fall-
an early sacrifice.
The eye, a vase,
can't keep the flowers whole.
The shape we know as rose
is their undoing: they
pass through without stopping for
the word to form. They lean
toward us and away, as if
we were the reason
they let go.
